Local Fire Service recruiting
Four open days are to take place at fire stations across the county over the next week in a bid to encourage new recruits into the service.
Men and women, aged 18 years and over, looking to challenge themselves and possessing a passion and commitment to serve their community, are invited to information evenings (7-8.30pm) at Ballyjamesduff Fire Station (June 8); Virginia (June 9); Cavan (June 13); and Ballyconnell (June 15).
Applicants shall possess adequate literacy and numeric skills, and an appropriate level of physical fitness.
Possession of a Class C Driving Licence would be “an advantage” according to the recruitment blurb.
It is part of the Terms of Engagement for Retained/Part-time Fire Personnel that persons appointed shall work and reside within a distance of 1.5 miles from the fire station.
A firefighter would typically be required to undertake a minimum of 100 hours of training including drill nights at the local fire station and ongoing training courses during each year of employment.
John Lovett, station officer in Ballyjamesduff, says new recruits become probationary firefighters before further developing their skills and experiences operationally.
He adds that each person follows in the “footsteps” of a long line of first responders, a legacy of men and women who have served their county and community and have worn the badge of their fire service with pride and honour.
“No two days are the same. No two call outs are the same. Yes, there are times when the job can be difficult, but you are working as part of a team, colleagues you know you can rely on.”
