Planning continuing for major school extensions
Design teams have been appointed for projects at two local secondary schools.
Breifne College in Cavan Town and Coláiste Dún an Rí in Kingscourt are both getting extra classroom capacity.
Members of CMETB were given an update at their most recent meeting, where updates on €123 million worth of investment in schools across Cavan and Monaghan were given.
Initial approval was given last November for another major expansion of Breifne College, which is expected to grow capacity at the school and allow it to accommodate 1,200 students.
Four additional general classrooms, seven supporting teaching spaces, two special education classrooms, three science labs and two prep rooms, two engineering rooms, two tech rooms and two prep room, a graphics room, art room, textiles room, five project store and ancillary office space are all planned.
Members of the board were told a design team has been appointed for the project, with preliminary work already underway.
It’s a similar situation with Coláiste Dún an Rí where planning is continuing to double the size of the school.
A design team has also been appointed there to plan capacity for 1,000 pupils. Preliminary designs are being drawn up.
The Kingscourt Community Centre is to return to housing students from the school in the meantime, as reported by the Celt earlier this month. Planning permission was granted recently to allow the conversion of parts of the building into classrooms.
