Rapid chargers planned for Cavan and Virginia
Cavan is part of a regional project, which aims to bring a network of high speed electric vehicle chargers to local areas.
The FASTER Project is funded by the European Union and sees cooperation between bodies in Ireland, Northern Ireland and Scotland to help the transition to “low carbon transport systems”.
Councils in the East Border Region, Cavan, Monaghan, Meath, Louth and Newry, Mourne and Down District Council, Armagh, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council and Ards and North Down Borough Council in Northern Ireland are taking part.
Councillors in Cavan recently voted to hand its powers related to the project to Louth County Council. It will act as a lead authority on the project, with overall decision making responsibility related to tendering and other processes. The motion was proposed by Cllr John Paul Feeley (FF) and seconded by Cllr Winston Bennett (FG).
Under the project it’s expected Virginia and Cavan Town will see rapid chargers installed, with three chargers in each town.
As reported by the Celt last month, talks are underway between the local authority and a private operator on the installation of an electric vehicle charging network across the country.
Councillors were told at their May meeting that those discussions are continuing.
