A photo of the sons of Cavan footballing legend John Joe O’Reilly playing playing with Sam Maguire and the National League trophy in 1948, the year their father would famously lead the county to an historic double, has been shared online.

The restored photo of Brian and Breffni O'Reilly playing with Sam Maguire and the National League trophy was shared by the John Joe O'Reilly Memorial Monument, a group set up to coordinate a fundraising campaign to have a statue erected in Cavan Town memorialising Cavan’s most iconic footballing hero.

The proposal is that the sculpture would be located at the Market Square, and created by internationally renowned artist Seamus Connolly.
