Talks to reopen bus station
Bus Éireann says it’s committed to the future of Cavan Town’s bus station.
The building closed in March 2020 at the start of 19 lockdown but never reopened.
The issue was raised at the recent meeting of Cavan County Council by Fine Gael’s Madeleine Argue, who described it as “something that has slipped under the radar”.
“People are being forced to stand outside in all weathers waiting on a bus. There’s no toilet or washroom for people after a three-hour journey,” she said. The situation was branded as “ridiculous” by party colleague Peter McVitty who criticised the complete closure of the building.
Cllr Sarah O’Reilly (AON) highlighted safety concerns.
“People are having to stand on the street. Covid is being used as an excuse.” Cllr Argue said she understood talks were to take place on reopening the building, something confirmed by Bus Éireann in a statement to The Anglo-Celt.
“Representatives from Bus Éireann will meet with the existing station vendors later this week to discuss the potential re-opening of the bus station.”
The company says the “significant reduction in the number of passengers” using its services at the beginning of the pandemic led to the closure of the station. However, it says it “is committed to the future of Cavan Town bus station and to the continued provision of bus services to the people of Cavan town and county”.
