Bailieborough CS reach debate final
Pupils from Bailieborough Community School are preparing for a big day out this week as four students are set to participate in an All Ireland competition.
Shane Hogan, Meghan Gavins, Claire Finnegan-Murphy, and Luke Delaney are through to the Concern Debates All-Ireland Shield Final on Wednesday, March 9. They take on Sandford Park School, Ranelagh, Dublin.
The Bailieborough students have navigated a difficult rout to the final. Last November they took on Scoil Uí Mhuirí, Dunleer, Louth proposing the motion 'School Strikes are an effective way of getting governments to act on Climate change. They won by that debate by 3:0. BCS also secured a 3:0 victory against Coláiste Dún Rí, in the debate, 'The challenges to ending world hunger are insurmountable'.
On the Friday, January 21 the team took on Colaiste Naomh Cormac, Kilcormac, Offaly opposing the motion, 'It is simply wrong for billionaires like Bezos, Branson and Musk to 'joyride' to space with so man problems back on earth'. BCS won their regional heat and were in the top 20 schools taking part in the Concern Debates.
The points gained from the regional league qualified them to compete in the Shield league. They progressed to the semi-finals against Colaiste Bride, Carnew, Wexford. BCS were opposing the motion, 'Governments in the global south must actively discourage rapid urbanisation'. BCS successfully won 2:1 against a very strong Wexford side.
The debaters take on Sandford Park School on March 9 when they oppose the motion, 'Globalization is a force for good'.
