From Famine times to post Covid times
ANNIVERSARY Celt celebrates 175 years with special publication
This week marks a very special week for The Anglo-Celt in business, but also in the lives of Cavan people.
We bring you a 32-page souvenir supplement to celebrate 175 years of the Celt reporting the important news and issues of the day.
The first issue was printed on February 6, 1846, in Famine times. And, yes, before an eagle eyed reader points it out, technically that was 176 years ago this month.
However, this time last year the country was still in the midst of a pandemic and on lockdown. So it was decided, like so many other celebrations from birthdays and anniversaries to weddings, to postpone our 175-year celebrations until a more appropriate time.
The publication inside includes articles from historian Jonathan Smyth and former managing editor Johnny O’Hanlon, interviews with newsagents, former staff members, as well as numerous reflections and old photographs. It looks back on 175 years of The Anglo-Celt but also how the county and newspaper have evolved in a modern digital era.
The Celt is as deeply rooted in Cavan today as it was in 1846 and all things Cavan are very much at the core of the Celt.
Our special publication also features messages of congratulations from the President of Ireland, Michael D. Higgins and the Taoiseach Micheál Martin reflecting on the important role of regional newspapers in a democratic society.
Today, the Celt is still published weekly but the news is also brought to you, as it happens, on our website - www.anglocelt.ie - and shared on our social media channels.
But our core ethos remains the same - to bring you balanced news, sport, photographs and video coverage from a source you can trust. Thanks to all our loyal readers and advertisers down through the years.
