One Cavan detection on ‘Slow Down Day'
There was only one speed detection in Cavan as An Garda Síochána and the Road Safety Authority (RSA) rolled out their national speed enforcement operation ‘Slow Down Day'.
The only detection in the county under the operation was a 112km/h in a 100km/h Zone on the N3 at Straheglin, Belturbet, Cavan.
An Garda Síochána and the Road Safety Authority (RSA) urged motorists to reduce their speed and be mindful of vulnerable road users on ‘Slow Down Day’. The speed enforcement operation ran for a 24 hour period from 07:00am on Thursday, October 21 to 07.00am Friday, October 22, 2021.
'Slow Down Day' took place in the run up to the October Bank Holiday weekend, reminding drivers of the dangers of speeding. The call for increased compliance with speed limits is to act as a deterrent to driving at excessive or inappropriate speed. The overall objective is to reduce the number of speed related collisions, save lives and reduce injuries on our roads. International research has estimated that 30% of fatal collisions are the result of speeding or inappropriate speed.
Speed enforcement during ‘Slow Down Day’ consisted of high visibility speed enforcement in 1,322 speed enforcement zones.
Government Departments, Local Authorities, public and private sector fleet operators were invited to participate in the initiative by circulating the message to 'Slow Down' to employees and, whether driving for business or private purposes, to always drive within the speed limit and at a speed appropriate to the prevailing conditions.
Five people have been killed and 59 people seriously injured in October Bank Holiday collisions between 2016-2020. As of October 19, 2021 there have been 113 people killed on Irish roads as a result of 102 fatal collisions.
