Athboy man helps Boys in Green carve out needed win
Jamie McGrath played his part in helping the Republic of Ireland carve out a 3-0 victory over Azerbaijan in Baku today.
The St Mirren midfielder came on for the second-half as the Boys in Green picked up their first competitive victory under Stephen Kenny.
This was McGrath's fourth cap and his second win as a member of the senior international team.
He made his debut in the 4-1 victory over Andorra in June but this was a significant win as it earns the Republic a morale-boosting success in a competitive outing.
Callum Robinson, who hit the headlines in midweek because of his views on Covid, fired home two goals while Chiedozie Ogbene found the net late on to to make it 3-0.
McGrath also had an effort late on but he was unable to find the net. However, the fact that Ireland also created a series of opportunities will give the team confidence as the push building for the future under Kenny.
According to one report McGrath brought "composure" to the Irish midfield with his passing today helping the visitors create openings.
