Council apply for funding for Cashel Cross fix
Cavan County Council has progressed plans to improve a junction, the scene of several fatal and serious traffic accidents, near Ballinagh.
An application for funding has been made to the relevant department, after concerns about Cashel Cross were once again raised at the recent bi-monthly meeting of elected members in the Ballyjamesduff Municipal District area.
Fine Gael's Winston Bennett tabled the motion, with John McGahern, senior executive engineer, responding. Earlier this year plans were unveiled for the installation of two right-turning lanes and a staggering of the road junctions coming onto the N55 at Cashel Cross.
The local authority was asked to examine what could be done in light of the most recent fatality, which occurred in February 2020, and claimed the lives of two people.
Mr McGahern told the meeting that funding had been applied for to implement safety measures along the stretch.
Cllr Bennett though queried the need for a proposed traffic island, which is set to be located in the centre of the road on approach to Ballinagh.
He said he had received a number of representations from members of the public, as had Fianna Fáil's Philip Brady.
Mr McGahern said the issue was one he had inherited, and committed to referring the matter to the road design team.
