Three provinces marketing plan

Cavan County Council is to examine the possibility of marketing the site where three provinces and three counties meet. Three townlands Corhanagh, Cavan; Gulladoo,, Leitrim; and Fihoragh Longford come together as Ulster, Connaught and Leinster converge in the Arva area.

The matter was raised at the March meeting of the local authority in a motion by Fine Gael councillor Winston Bennett who proposed promoting the area as a tourist attraction.

Cllr Bennett said that the location was unique on the island of Ireland. The councillor said that, although there is a location in Offaly, Galway and Tipperary, this point is under the waters of Lough Derg.

“It’s something that could be developed as a tourism site. It’s a unique area and something we should shout about,” Cllr Bennett said of the Arva site.

Backing the motion Cllr Shane P O’Reilly said it was a great idea: “This is the kind of thing that could become very popular with people who want to explore their own country as tourism opens up.”

This point was reiterated by Cllr Aidan Fitzpatrick: “People are realising that you don’t have to run to the seaside to enjoy a staycation. Cavan has a lot to offer and this could be another string to our bow.”

Cllr Peter McVitty suggested the adjoining councils could work together: “Longford and Leitrim will surely see the benefit of developing this. We need to be singing off the same hymn sheet.”

Cllr Brendan Fay said that the local authority should do everything possible to move the suggestion from being an idea to a real tourism product. Also speaking in support of the motion were Cllr John Paul Feely, Cllr Patricia Walsh, Cllr TP O’Reilly and Cathaoirleach Sarah O’Reilly.

Director of Service Brendan Jennings said that it was a plan worth looking into: “Any new tourism development is welcome in the county. We will see what we can do. We will perform an assessment to see how it can be developed.”
