WATCH: Local school celebrates Lá Fhéile Pádraig
Almost a year ago today the school welcomed President Michael D. Higgins to officially open their new building at at Cock Hill.
With St. Patrick's Day around the corner, the pupils at one local school have really got in the mood to celebrate.
Gaelscoil Bhréifne in Cavan Town has gone bright 'glás' in honour of the national holiday and in recognition of Seachtain na Gaeilge too.
Our video shows Junior and Senior infants performing poetry outside in the sun, while Third to Sixth classes play music inside, as well as school principal Niamh Ni Cheallaigh leading the second class pupils in a rendition of the Jerusalema dance.
In this current year the gaelscoil, the only one in Cavan, celebrates 25 years since its foundation.
Gaelscoil Bhréifne is now also one of the fastest growing gaelscoileanna in the country.
Almost a year ago today the school welcomed President Michael D. Higgins to officially open their new building at at Cock Hill. Recently the school applied for planning permission to add to the facility.
At the time An Uachtaráin planted a sapling oak tree on the grounds. The tree is “symbolic” of the growth of both the students and the school.
The day after Gaelscoil Bhréifne closed its doors due to the Covid pandemic.
Tuesday marked only the second day of reopening since the Level 5 lockdown restrictions came into effect towards the end of last year.
“Gaelscoil Bhréifne was founded in 1995, so we celebrate 25 years open this year which is a wonderful achievement for everyone concerned. We had intended last year to mark the occasion but for Covid. So we feel it's very poignant to celebrate the lá glás,” explained Ms Ni Cheallaigh. “When lockdown came into effect last year the children finished up on March 12 in 2020. Now they are able to return this week, on March 13, 2021. It's symbolic too that the tree President Higgins planted last year is now starting to grow.”
