Castlesaunderson’s dog poo problem raised
Criticism aimed at irresponsible dog owners
The council were complimented at the recent Belturbet Cavan Municipal District meeting for the fine road enhancement and other works at Castlesaunderson, but criticism was aimed some walking their dogs who it was claimed have little respect for the beautyspot.
Cllr Peter McVitty told the virtual meeting that he received great reports about improvement works at the location.
But he said that the popularity of the area with walkers has thrown up a problem which the council must now address.
“Some of them are bringing along their dogs and now there is dog poo all over the place, as a result of them not bringing a bag and picking it up,” he lamented.
The Fine Gael Cllr suggested to Senior Executive Engineer Paul Mulligan consider having signs erected at strategic locations to see if those failing to pick up their dog litter might take the message on board.
Chairman Brendan Fay informed the meeting that he was in Enniskillen some time back and said that notices about dog fouling are painted on the footpaths in high visibility locations.
Mr Mulligan promised to engage with his Waste Management colleagues on the matter.
“All these measures can be put in place but it still boils down to the behaviour of the individual,” he observed.
“People walking dogs are being asked to “leave no trace”.
In relation to the enhancement works at the castle, Mr Mulligan explained that the paths in and around the amenity have also been upgraded, as has the link down to the jetty area, where Waterways Ireland provided the jetty.
“That jetty will be a huge asset into the future for the site at Castlesaunderson,” predicted Mr Mulligan of the future tourism potential.
