Argue gets senior post on Fine Gael executive
A Cavan county councillor has said she is honoured to become vice-president of Fine Gael Executive Council.
Councillor Madeleine Argue, who has represented the Cavan-Belturbet electoral area since 1999, was appointed to the position by the party’s executive council following a recent meeting.
Cllr Argue joins former minister and current Carlow/Kilkenny T.D. John Paul Phelan, who is the other vice-president. She will serve in her role as vice-president until the next Árd Fheis.
Cllr Argue has much experience in local politics as her father Andy O’Brien, former Senator (1969-1987), represented the people of Cavan before her. She was elected as Cathaoirleach of Cavan County Council in 2018-19, and she is a former chairperson of Cavan VEC, later CMETB.
“I am truly humbled and honoured to have been appointed Vice-President of Fine Gael’s Executive Council," she said.
“My family have a proud tradition of being Fine Gael supporters and remain deeply committed to the party. I have five brothers and one sister, and I was chosen to take up the mantle in 1999 to represent the people of Cavan.
“I thoroughly enjoy my role as a councillor, I love dealing with people and helping them. I would be very active in the community and still serve on various boards including the Cavan Monaghan Education and Training board.
“Since the start of the Covid crisis, Fine Gael has demonstrated competence in protecting people and businesses from the threats posed by this dreadful virus. There are plenty of challenges ahead and we stand ready in Government to manage the new threats facing people.”
Cllr Argue succeeds Gerry O’Connell in the position.
Fiona O’Connor, chairperson of Fine Gael’s Executive Council said, “Madeleine is someone who is steeped in the tradition of the Fine Gael party and will bring a wide perspective to the Executive Council. She is also prepared to speak her mind and will be a most welcome addition to the Executive Council.”
Fine Gael Party Leader and President of the executive council, Leo Varadkar TD, said Madeleine Argue brings a wealth of experience in local politics, knowledge and ability to the party’s Executive Council.
“I would like to congratulate Madeleine Argue on her appointment as Vice-President of the Fine Gael Party. Madeleine has been involved in local politics for over 20 years and has proven herself to be a diligent and dedicated public representative for the people of Cavan.
“I have known Madeleine for many years and I look forward to working with her on the executive council,” Mr Varadkar said.
