White House race still up for grabs
The outcome of the American presidential election remains delicately poised with the Democrats' Joe Biden the slight favourite to win. While the outcome may not be decided for another day or two, if Biden wins the states in which he currently leads, the former vice president will reach the threshold of 270 electoral votes.
President Trump has already both claimed victory and threatened legal action despite an impressive performance which once again had bamboozled the pollsters.
The incumbent secured impressive wins over night in Florida, Ohio and Texas which bolstered his prospects of remaining in the White House for another four years - and looks poised to claim North Carolina and Georgia.
All eyes are on the key battle grounds of Wisconsin (97% of ballots counted, Biden leading 49.5% to 48.8%), Michigan (16 electoral college votes, 90% of ballots counted, Biden leads 49.3% 49.1%) and most significantly Pennsylvannia. The latter has 20 electoral college votes up for grabs but is expected to continue counting into Friday. With 76% of the ballots counted, Trump is leading 54.7%to 43.9%.
