Almost €217,000 renewal allocated for Cavan

The Government’s July Stimulus Package allocated an extra €10 million of funding to support towns and villages to adapt to COVID-19 under the 2020 Town and Village Renewal Scheme.

Almost €217,000 has been approved for a total of seven projects under the Town and Village Renewal Fund.

Designed to assist towns and villages to adapt to Covid-19, it includes €40,000 for Safe Outdoor Covered Area with seating in Cavan Town.

Over €100,000 will meanwhile be spent on Broadband Connection Points in Bailieborough-Cootehill (3 at €39,600), Ballyjamesduff (4 at €24,750) and Belturbet (4 at €39,600).

Outdoor projects in Dowra, Ballyhaise and Baileborough have also been approved funding.

In Dowra, an allocation of €22,760 will be used to provide a Safe Outdoor area at Dowra Courthouse with furniture, bike Stands and gym equipment; €25,000 each to Ballyhaise to add an awning and marquee enhancements to the local Community Centre; and in Bailieborough for Town Lake enhancements as an Outdoor Education Facility.

The projects approved, its hoped, will assist businesses/communities in towns and villages to adapt to the specific challenges posed by COVID-19 and increase footfall and generate economic activity in the short-term.

Minister for Social Protection Heather Humphreys welcomed the allocation. She said that supports for towns and villages are more important now than ever, given the impact of Covid-19.

“Cavan County Council has made really good applications for projects ranging from outdoor seating and alterations to broadband connection points.

“This total investment of almost €217,000 will make a huge difference across the county.”

The Minister added that rural towns and villages have always played a huge role in supporting businesses and communities by providing spaces for people to meet, socialise and shop locally. “Recognising their importance to the economic and social well-being of rural areas, the Town and Village Renewal Scheme has invested significantly in towns and villages over the last number of years.

“The scheme is now more important than ever to assist businesses and communities to address the challenges that COVID-19 has brought to their towns and villages.”
