Cavan's Senator lands Seanad Leas Cathaoirleach
A former Vice President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, and leader of the Irish delegation, Sen O'Reilly's new position comes with an allowance of €25,357 on top of a senator’s salary of €68,111, taking remuneration to €93,468.
Cavan's four term Senator Joe O'Reilly is set to be ratified by the Seanad next week as Government nominee for the position of Leas Cathaoirleach.
The Bailieborough-native emerged victorious in a vote, which also featured fellow Senator Sean Kyne, and former Government Minister and Chief Whip, Cork Senator Tim Lombard.
The behind closed doors vote was overseen by Party Chairman, Richard Bruton last Thursday morning.
Senator O'Reilly, a former TD, a member of the Oireachtas with 18 years' experience, told the Celt: “I am absolutely delighted to have secured the position and it is recognition of many years of committed service. It is nice to be selected by one's peers in a three-way contest within my party.”
The Celt understands Sen O'Reilly's successful campaign was spearheaded by Senator John McGahon from Louth, and also Senator Michael Carrigy from Longford.
Over his four terms in the Seanad, Sen O'Reilly has been spokesman on Communications, Energy and Natural Resources.
He was also highly involved in piloting through the Broadcasting Bill.
He is currently spokesperson on Foreign Affairs, Trade and European Affairs and Brexit, and will retain that role.
