Ulster Canal funding part of July Jobs Stimulus
“Bringing continued investment to rural Ireland is central to my objectives as Minister. Rural areas are at the heart of our social and economic recovery"- Minister Humphreys
Funding for the Ulster Canal has formed a key part of the Government’s July Jobs Stimulus.
The stimulus, announced by the Government today (July 23), commits to “progressing the next phase of the Ulster Canal by completing the feasibility of the design and engineering of the harbour at Clones; and supporting feasibility, planning and design works for the Sligo-Enniskillen Greenway.”
Minister Humphreys played a leading role in devising the Jobs Stimulus, as Minister for Social Protection and Rural and Community Development and the Islands.
On Friday, the Fine Gael TD announced €112m in stimulus measures aimed at getting people – young and old – back to work.
She also announced €10m for the Town and Village Renewal Scheme, as well as €5m for community centres.
Minister Humphreys said she had pressed on her Government colleagues the major tourism potential as a result of bringing the project to fruition.
Welcoming the decision, Minister Humphreys said: “This has been a huge priority for me and I am delighted that it has formed a key part of the stimulus package.
“The people of Clones have been seeking this project for several years and I know this news will come as music to the ears of the local community.
“Investing in our inland waterways is crucial to ensuring we have vibrant and thriving rural communities. As Minister, I know this project will have a hugely positive impact on rural development.”
But she said the project would not just bring economic benefits, and that it would be “crucial too” for tourism, as well as building peace and reconciliation.
“I know that Waterways Ireland and Monaghan County Council will work closely together to bring this project forward.”
Minister Humphreys concluded by saying: “Bringing continued investment to rural Ireland is central to my objectives as Minister. Rural areas are at the heart of our social and economic recovery.”
