TD highlights concern over sodium valproate use in pregnancy
Studies conducted by Epilepsy Ireland show that less than 30% of women taking this drug have heard of the mandatory pregnancy prevention programme offered by the HSE for users of the drug and only 22% have been asked by their healthcare professional to sign the annual risk acknowledgement form to maintain awareness
A local TD wants more women to be aware of the risks associated with taking sodium valproate during pregnancy.
“Sodium valproate is a very effective seizure management drug, also known as Epilim,” explains Fianna Fáil TD for Cavan-Monaghan Niamh Smyth. “For many this drug is used to successfully manage epilepsy. However, there are risks associated with taking this drug while pregnant. This may result in the baby having very significant developmental issues.
The mum-of-one herself stated that more women “need to be aware” of the potential consequences of using the drug during pregnancy. “I understand the HSE now have procedures in place in order to protect women taking the drug.

The local Oireachtas representative concluded by saying: “It is important we all take note of this very serious issue and reach out to other women to make them aware of the potential ramifications from this drug.”
