BREAKING: Ireland will have a new Government

The Green Party has voted in favour of entering coalition with Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael.

Following the announcement earlier this evening that both Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil had also endorsed the Programme for Government, it means a new government and Taoiseach will be elected tomorrow when Dáil Eireann sits at the Convention Centre in Dublin.

The Green Party voted by 1,435 to 457 (76% to 24%) for the motion to enter government on the basis of the Programme for Government.

1,991 ballots were issued with 1,904 returned before the deadline. 12 votes were either invalid/spoilt or abstentions.

Under its own rules, The Green Party required a two-thirds majority to pass the deal, whilst Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael required a simple majority.

Earlier tonight, Fianna Fáil confirmed it had passed the deal by 74 per cent to 26 per cent.

A total of 8,194 votes were cast in favour, and 2,864 were opposed to the deal.

77% of eligible Fianna Fáil voters took part in the ballot, with 13 spoiled votes registered.

Fine Gael also approved the deal today, with 80% of the total votes cast in favour of the programme.

90 per cent of the parliamentary party (TDs, senators and MEPs) were in favour. The margin among local councillors was much tighter, with 57 per cent approving the deal and 43 per cent voting against it.

Amongst constituency delegates, 71 per cent approved the deal while 29 per cent did not. Support among the executive council of the party saw 85 per cent vote in favour.

The agreement of all three parties brings to an end a 139-day period since the general election without a permanent government being formed.

The focus now switches to the Convention Centre tomorrow, where Micheál Martin will be nominated for Taoiseach and is expected to receive support of a number of independent TDs along with Dáil deputies from his own party, Fine Gael and The Green Party.

And politicians from the three main parties will be anxiously awaiting calls from their respective party leaders over the coming hours with Cabinet portfolios up for grabs.

The identity of the new Ministers is likely to be publicly confirmed in the hours following the election of Micheál Martin as Taoiseach with Fine Gael leader Leo Varadkar set to be appointed Tánaiste.

Junior ministries, however, are likely to be allocated over the forthcoming days rather than hours.
