Investigation after 55 dogs found in truck

A major multi-agency investigation is underway after several dozen dogs, including four nursing bitches and their pups, were found being transported in the back of a truck in Cavan earlier this month.

The canines were found and recovered after a truck was stopped by Gardaí conducting an Operation Fanacht checkpoint at Corduff, Ballinagh on Monday last week, May 4.

Operation Fanacht is a system of checkpoints on Ireland's roads designed to ensure no non-essential travel is occurring.

Upon inspection of the truck, officers discovered the dogs, believed to have been as many as 55, and contacted other statutory agencies for assistance before seizing the animals.

Its understood three nursing bitches and their three sets of pups (12 total) went to the local Cavan SPCA, where they are currently being cared for.

All dogs are Jack Russell Terrier or Jack Russell cross type.

The fourth nursing bitch was placed under the care of a council veterinary inspector.

The remaining dogs were all scanned for microchipping, with one from the number positively identified and sureturned to its owner who lives outside the county.
