Death of popular GAA man
The death has occurred of Larry McCluskey (in his 78th year), 6 Bellamount View, Cootehill, peacefully at St Vincent’s University Hospital in Dublin.
Mr McCluskey, a popular columnist with this newspaper, was a man of many talents. Formerly the CEO of Monaghan VEC, Mr McCluskey played minor football for Cavan, winning an Ulster medal and scoring a goal in the 1959 All-Ireland minor final.
He went on teach in Africa for a time before returning to Ireland, where he was also heavily involved in amateur dramatics.
In recent years, he was chairman of Cootehill Celtic GAA Club and a familiar figure at GAA functions and county board meetings where he was well-regarded for his ability to express his opinions most articulately.
“Larry was a well respected figure, a fantastic character and a tremendous GAA man,” stated Cavan county board chairman Kieran Callaghan.
“I’m shocked and saddened by his passing and express my condolences to his family and many friends. He will be greatly missed.”
Editor of The Anglo-Celt, Linda O'Reilly paid this tribute to Larry: “It was great sadness that the team in the Celt learned on Monday of the passing of Larry McCluskey – our colourful and controversial ‘Off the Fence’ columnist. Larry is well-known and respected through his links with the local Cootehill Celtic GAA club and the drama festival among other community groups. Larry was a great character – a one-off – and he will be sorely missed by all in the Celt, in Cootehill, Cavan and further afield.”
Mr McCluskey will be missed by his children Fiona Reynolds, Kealan, Dara, Con, Lorcan and Fergus; sister Pauline Whitty; brothers Declan, Gerry, Michael; dear friend Catherine; sisters-in-law; nephews; nieces; relatives and friends.
A private funeral for Larry will take place, due to Government advice regarding public gatherings.
A celebration of Larry’s life will take place at a later date. A full obituary and tribute to Larry will be included in The Anglo-Celt in the coming weeks.
