Most polling stations report near 50% turnout
Will the change in weather also reflect the change in voter mood expressed in the run up to polling day, or will the perceived storm be confined to a proverbial teacup?
A better than usual turnout with steady streams of people voting espeically in the early portion of the day surprised some analysts but enthused candidates who hope the surge will sway in their favour when counting gets underway tomorrow (Sunday), February 9, at 9am, in the Cavan Leisure Centre.
In Co Cavan, voter turnout in Cavan Town’s St Clare’s NS (13 booths) approaching late afternoon is 41.51%. It had been upwards of 33% at 3pm, up from 17.98% at midday, and 6.08% at 10am.
in Virginia Town (5 booths) turnout currently stands at around 48.31%.
In Ballyjamesduff polling remains strong at St Clare’s NS (5 booths) where turnout is estimated at around 46.5%, and at St Anne’s NS (7 booths) in Bailieborough turnout is 47%.
In the 2016 Dail election, almost 5,700 votes were cast according to tallies from that time in the Cavan-Belturbet (West Cavan) Municipal District area, over 9,850 in Ballyjamesduff, and 12,845 in Bailieborough-Cootehill. Total 28,377 (tally).
In neighbouring Co Monaghan, St Louis Girls’ NS (5 booths) in Monaghan Town has experienced turnout coasting near 48% turnout to date, up from 37% halfway through the day.
In Castleblayney Boys NS (7 booths), turnout is 44%, and in Clones, at St Tiarnach’s Primary (4 booths), polling estimates are trending near 46%.
The Monaghan MD area saw nearly 9,500 votes cast there in 2016, just under 10,700 in Carrickmacross-Castleblayney, and over 10,330 in Ballybay-Clones. Total 30,464 (tally).
