Fire victim yet to be identified
Gardai believe it may take 'some time' before the identity of a man who tragically lost his life in a fatal fire in Cavan Town last night can be confirmed.
This morning, Sunday, January 26, the body the male, believed to have been aged in his 40’s, remains at the scene.
The local Coroner has been notified.
The scene just off Main Street is still sealed off this morning as authorities preserve the area for forensic and technical examination. This is expected to get underway later today. However, while the cause of the fire has yet to be established, Gardaí say that foul play is “not suspected” at this time.
One man died and several others were injured following the blaze just off Main Street shortly before 8pm on Saturday, January 25.
The alarm was first raised when smoke was noticed coming from the apartment building.
Local Fire Services attached to Cavan Town and Belturbet attended at the scene, rescuing two adults and a child from the burning building.
They were subsequently taken to Cavan General Hospital and treated treated for injuries relating to smoke inhalation.
Two firemen were also treated for "minor injuries" following the incident, with Cavan County Council later confirming that the members were taken to Cavan General Hospital where they were both "retained for observation".
It was only after the fire was fully brought under control that emergency services made the tragic discovery that a male had also perished in the blaze in one of the apartments.
The authorities say it may take “some time” before the man’s identity if finally established.
