Dashing through the Cavan streets

If you are looking for a way to burn off a few of the additional calories taken on board over on Christmas Day, then the Cavan Christmas Dash has to be high on your list.
Get St Stephen’s day off to a cracking start by joining hundreds of runners as they take to the streets of Cavan Town today (Thursday), December 26, for this annual event.
Organiser Liam Mimnagh told the Celt that the beneficiaries of this year’s fundraising run will be two cancer support charities in Cavan. They are ‘The Friends of Cavan Oncology’ and ‘Cuan’.
Cuan is a social support group for cancer survivors first established in 2012. A couple of interested cancer survivors started a discussion and decided to set up the psycho-social support group for the Cavan area. Cuan opened later that year for people with a cancer diagnosis to come along for a gentle exercise class and a cup of coffee and a chat.
For the last two decades, the nurse-led Medical Oncology Unit at CGH has established a reputation of dedication in the delivery chemotherapy, non-surgical treatment for cancer and supportive care.
In September the unit marked the 20-year anniversary of the service, with Cavan General Hospital celebrating 30 years in existence in June of this year.
The 20th anniversary celebration of the Oncology Unit brought together past patients, well-wishers and hospital staff to acknowledge the achievement of the last two decades.
Liam said everyone who has been a part of the Dash have made a lasting contribution to the charities that have benefited: “The support we have received from people over the last number of years has been incredible. Last year we raised just under €12,500 for Drumlin House and The Cavan Parkinson’s Association. We had 650 runners taking part and that was up on the previous year. We are hoping that the numbers will continue to grow and that we will soon hit the magic 1,000 mark.”
