Aldi denies new store plans for Cootehill
German discounter Aldi has denied it is getting ready to lodge a planning application for a new supermarket in Cootehill.
There has been widespread speculation in the area over for the past number of months that a new Aldi store is coming to the town but this week a source informed The Anglo-Celt: “There are no plans for a store in Cootehill.”
There had been speculation that the discount store had targeted a site in Cootehill and that it would be purchased subject to planning permission at Station Road. Cavan County Council confirmed that no planning application has been submitted to the local authority in respect of any such development. It is understood that diggers have been doing some clearing work in recent weeks at the site, fuelling speculation that it could be to facilitate a survey of the site.
It will be interesting to see how this all unfolds in the coming months, and whether a new outlet has designs on opening in the town.
