Strides to set up Parkrun for Cavan Town
Arrangements are well advanced to setting up a free weekly timed Parkrun in Con Smith Park. You can walk, jog, run or push a buggy.
A public meeting will take place this Friday, October 5, at 7pm, in the Farnham Arms Hotel to discuss details and gauge interest and community support for the initiative.
“We are a not-for-profit group that sets up free weekly 5k runs in local parks and we are looking at the creation of a community parkrun in Con Smith Park Cavan. The objectives behind parkrun are around the health benefits both mental and physical of exercise and social inclusion and we would see ourselves as a health and wellbeing initiative with an association to sport,” said Matt Shiels, Parkrun Ireland county manager.
Park runs have been up and running for some time now in Cootehill; while a new event was launched in Deerpark Forest Virginia recently and also in Crosserlough GAA.
“Cavan has been a target location for us for well over a year and finding a viable course has been a challenge. We seem to have overcome this phase so now it’s about building a team of community volunteers to manage the event,” said Matt.
