Armed response unfortunately necessary to curb violence in Cavan – Smith

The arrival of the Armed Support Unit to Cavan is an unfortunate, but necessary act to curb violence in the area, says a local Fianna Fáil TD.

Deputy Brendan Smith added that he has been raising the need for additional Garda resources in the border region for a considerable length of time.

“Earlier this month in reply to further Parliamentary Questions in Dáil Éireann I was informed by the Justice Minister that the Garda Commissioner had decided to establish an additional Armed Support Unit in Cavan," Deputy Smith explained. "I had highlighted the unique policing demands of the Cavan/Monaghan region.

Incidents

“Unfortunately, there has been an increase in the past few years of incidents of a cross-border nature and this thuggery and criminality needs to be rooted out.  Of course, Brexit and the possibility of the UK leaving the EU without a deal brings its own additional challenges.

“We cannot celebrate an Armed Response Unit in our community but it has to be a welcome step in tackling this deplorable behaviour,” concluded Deputy Smith.
