Two remain in custody over ATM theft
Two men remain in custody in connection to the attempted theft of an ATM at Main Street in Virginia last week.
The two males, aged in their thirties, were arrested yesterday (August 21) and continued to be held at Kells Garda Station for questioning. They are being held under the provisions of section 50 of the Criminal Justice Act 2007, allowing for up to seven days’ detention.
A 25 year old male was also arrested on suspicion of money laundering offences, and is detained under section 4 Criminal Justice Act 1984 at Navan Garda Station. He has now been released without charge, with file currently being prepared for the information of the Director of Public Prosecutions.
Gardai noted that their investigations are still “ongoing”.
It brings to five the total number of arrests, including an uncle and three brothers, after gardai foiled an attempted ATM robbery in the early hours of last Wednesday outside the Riverfront Hotel.
The latest arrests came on Tuesday night, after members of the gang are understood to have returned to a yard in Moynalty, Co Meath where one was arrested last week, and where a sum of money estimated to be around €300,000 was recovered.
Along with arresting the three suspects, gardai found another €100,000 which had been hidden on site.
One of the men had been arrested only last week, but was subsequently released without charge pending further investigation.
Those arrested to date have addresses in Cavan, Meath, Armagh and Down.
Tuesday's recovery of money brings to €400,000 the amount seized since detectives moved against the men attempting to steal the ATM.
One person was arrested at the scene, and another man was later found hiding in the toilets of the Riverfront Hotel hours later after a major manhunt was conducted in nearby forestry.
A third man, aged in his 60's, was later detained following the search of the premises in Moynalty, where the €300,000 was found.
Gardaí in the Bailieborogh Garda Station and the Cavan/Monaghan Division are being assisted by the Emergency Response Unit and the National Surveillance Unit, as well as gardaí in Meath.
