Demolition work at Magheracloone to start

Demolition work on the GAA grounds destroyed when an old mine shaft collapsed last September is due to commence this week.

The pitch of Magheracloone Mitchells GAA club sustained major damage almost a year ago. A large rift opened at the club's Kevin O'Reilly Park, located on the Kingscourt to Carrickmacross Road, due to the collapse of a mine shaft in the area at that time.

Last week The Anglo Celt reported that a large new 'crown hole' opened up on lands attached to an old mining network. That subsidence is understood to be in an area two to three fields away from where a crown hole appeared at Magheracloone Mitchells GAA club in September, 2018.

The statement from the mining company said: “Gyproc is providing notification that, in agreement with Magheracloone GAA Club, Community Centre and Monaghan County Council, the appointed contractors to undertake the demolition programme of the Magheracloone GAA & Community Centre buildings will begin work on the site in the coming days.”

The company said the work is scheduled to be concluded by November 30, 2019. The future of the playing facilities for the club are still under discussion: “Discussions regarding long term replacement facilities with GAA and Community Centre representatives are ongoing,” the statment said.

The company acknowledged the significance of the demolition to Magheracloone Mitchells: “Gyproc recognises that the commencement of this necessary activity brings an end to part of the history of Magheracloone GAA & Community Centre in this area and is a sad day for the club and community. We will remain fully committed to replacing the lost facilities for the local community and its residents and will continue supporting the community and those affected by these events.”
