Upsets galore on opening championship weekend
The first weekend of the club championships is complete and already there have been a couple of shock results.
In the Intermediate Championship, recently-crowned Division 3 league champions Drumgoon pulled off a memorable victory over a highly-rated Laragh United side. The Boyle Park men were nine clear at one stage but ending up hanging on at the death to win by the minimum and get their campaign off to a flying start.
Elsewhere, a goal from Fionán O’Reilly proved the difference for Belturbet as they defeated Division 1 side Ballinagh, many people’s favourites for the Gilroy Cup, while Caoimhin O’Reilly scored 1-7 (1f) in a big win for Butlersbridge over Ramor United’s second string.
Elsewhere at intermediate level, Ballyhaise franked their fantastic recent form with a four-point win over Bailieborough, with Darragh Dolan bagging a hat-trick for Drumlane in their one-sided victory over Swanlinbar.
Elsewhere in the IFC, Cornafean finished strongly, winning the final 10 minutes by 0-6 to 0-1, to get the better of a wasteful Cuchulainns in Lavey, with Killeshandra pulling off a good win in their local derby against Arva.
In the Junior Championship, Liam Hennessy and Adam Rehill bagged 2-8 between them in an impressive Mountnugent win over Kildallan while, on Friday evening, a young and impressive Knockbride side saw off understrength Denn in New Inns.
Templeport had six points to spare against Drumalee, with Killinkere – recently promoted to Division 1 – putting up 4-15 against Kill and Redhills man Martin Walsh coming off the bench to record a hat-trick in their win over Corlough.
