Aontú to hold Dáil selection convention this evening

Aontú will hold its first Dáil selection convention for Cavan-Monaghan this evening (Monday), July 22, at 8pm in the Errigal Country House Hotel, Cootehill.
The party believe they have a significant chance of winning a Dáil seat in the constituency after party representative, Councillor Sarah O’Reilly, topped the poll in Bailieborough-Cootehill with 1,704 votes, and 15% of the overall first-preference vote for the Municipal District area.
While Cllr O’Reilly has not formally put her name forward for convention, she told The Anglo-Celt this week that she would be satisfied to stand should the party’s membership choose her as their candidate.
“This is a grassroots party. The members have control, they will ultimately decide who goes forward, and candidate selection is in their hands... If selected, I would be honoured to represent Aontú as a General Election candidate,” stated Cllr O’Reilly.
Aontú contested just half of the LEAs in the Cavan-Monaghan area with Cllr O’Reilly, Gráinne McPhillips in Ballyjamesduff, and Jim Duffy in Monaghan.
“We also have created functioning cumainn right through the constituency.
“This is a fantastic foundation on which we aim to build,” claims Aontú leader, Peadar Tóibín TD.
Winning a seat in the Cavan-Monaghan constituency he adds is a “key target” for Aontú.
“Cavan and Monaghan are extremely exposed to Brexit and yet the government has done nothing to build the All-Ireland economy. Cavan and Monaghan are entitled to jobs, economic investment, transport and communications infrastructure and the proper deliver of public services just the same as anywhere else and we in Aontú will fight for this in the Dáil,” says Deputy Tóibín.
