Planning permission for Laragh sports centre
An Bord Pleanála has upheld a decision by Cavan County Council to grant planning permission to the revision of plans for a sports facility in Laragh.
Laragh Sports Partnership, a local group established to provide the parish of Laragh with a new sports facility, were the subject of an appeal to the national planning oversight body. After the review the planning watchdog allowed them retain the revised site boundaries of the facility and also approved the diversion of an existing water stream at Monelty and Laragh, Stradone, Cavan.
The planning body reviewed an appeal lodged by Paul and Mairead Monahan on the plans for the sports facility. The report noted the site is located in Laragh, 10km east of Cavan and around two kilometres off the N3 at Stradone.
The site is adjacent to a National School and construction works are underway for the development of the sports facility including a playing field, dressing rooms, walk along track, lighting and access.
Cavan County Council granted planning permission to the development subject to 13 conditions. They included considerations on waste water treatment, flooding and screening.
In reaching a conclusion An Bord Pleanála said: “the location of the site, the scale and nature of the works and the compensatory flood mitigation measures, it is considered that, subject to compliance with the conditions set out below, the development for which retention is sought would not increase the flood risk in the area, would not seriously injure the amenity of the property in the vicinity and would not have a significant negative impact on the conservation objectives of any European sites, in particular Lough Oughter and Associated Loughs Special Area of Conservation”.
The planning body approved the project subject to two additional conditions. They are that the development is “in accordance with the plans and particulars lodged” and that all works on the site are “carried out and completed in accordance with the terms and conditions of the permission granted on 7th of December 2015”.
