Breifne College Tidy Towns project blooms

Fifth year students at Breifne College have showcased their superb woodwork skills by designing and crafting flower boxes for the Tidy Towns Committee in Cavan Town.
Their workmanship will be on display in windows across Cavan Town. They are thrilled with the fruits of their labour and are looking forward to seeing the boxes put to good use.
The three students involved in the project were Luke Jermyn, Alex Brady and Shay Smith. The boxes carry the inscription ‘A Breifne College and Tidy Towns Partnership Project’.
Construction Studies teacher, Pauric McWeeney, thanked the Tidy Towns Committee and their chairman Tony Prunty for sourcing the materials, so that the project could proceed.
Students who do Construction Studies can progress to doing courses such as Civil Engineering, Architecture or Construction Management at third level.
“To have good hands and to craft and manufacture something is a talent in itself,” said Mr McWeeney.
Luke Jermyn said: “I will be proud to see these boxes on sites around the town. It was great to be involved in doing this project. I like woodwork. I am a practical student and I like doing practical work.”
Alex Brady also enjoyed the project. “It got the whole class working together,” he said.
Classmate Shay Smith added: “We are happy that we delivered the boxes in good time. I would not mind making a few more of these boxes.”
Principal John Crotty said the students involved had “done the college proud” and thanked Mr McWeeney for his input.
“We part of the town and this is a chance to give something back,” said Mr Crotty.
He said there were already orders in the staff room for the students to make more boxes.
The chairman of the Cavan Tidy Towns Committee, Tony Prunty, thanked the students and their teacher for their hard work and assured them the flower boxes would be used to good effect.
“They are fantastic window boxes and I am sure there will be rave comments about them in time, when they are put up in the streets of Cavan.
“The students have done excellent work and the quality and expertise is superb and the designs show great individuality. We are involved with various schools, but this is one of the highlights.”
The boxes formed part of their Tidy Towns presentation last weekend.
