Almost €270k for laneway fixes

 

Almost €270,000 has been allocated to Co Cavan to fund improvement works to non-public rural roads through the Government’s Local Improvement Scheme.

The funding will provide upgrades non-public rural roads under the Government’s Local Improvement Scheme (LIS).

The funding includes €269,254 for Cavan and €250,000 for Monaghan.

The announcement follows the allocation of €636,680 to Cavan County Council under the same scheme last year.

The funding was welcomed by Heather Humphreys, Fine Gael TD for Cavan Monaghan and Minister for Business, Enterprise and Innovation, who said described the scheme as a lifeline for people living in rural areas because it directly improves their access to and from their homes and farms.

“Local connectivity is crucial to ensuring that rural Ireland can function well, and so the Scheme has been a massive success in the last year as it addressed an issue for which there is significant demand in our local communities,” said the Minister.

The funding was also welcomed by Fine Gael Senator Joe O’Reilly, who said: “It’s important to remember that many people living in rural areas use these roads every day, so when these roads fall into disrepair, it has a significant impact on them.”

He added that the upkeep of these roads is a priority for people who live in Cavan and this funding, in conjunction with the local community's own resources and the resources of Cavan County Council, will allow for the maintenance and improvement of many local roads in rural areas.

“I am also conscious of the high cost of repairing some of the more remote rural roads and the impact this can have on the contribution which people living and farming along those roads can be asked to make.”
