'The town has lost another good character'
Tributes were paid at the recent monthly meeting of elected members to the late Peter McCaffrey Jnr, who passed away suddenly at his home at St Martin’s Estate, Cavan Town on Sunday last, January 13.
“Cavan has lost a great community man and volunteer! Peter's work in the local area was legendary and his BBQ skills in our local community garden kept many an empty belly filled. May he rest in peace,” Sinn Féin's Daniel Downey said in passing a vote of sympathy to the McCaffrey family.
Tributes have also been paid online to the late Mr McCaffrey, by local club Cavan Celtic, where the dad of four regularly helped out with coaching.
The chairperson of the club wrote on social media: 'Peter was one of the original coaches of Cavan Celtic, when the club started over 12 years ago and coached for an number of years with the club. He was a big supporter of soccer in the county and of Cavan Celtic. In recent years Peter worked at Cavan Astro, where he would give me all the results, scorers and an reports of the matches that were played at the Astro at the weekends.
'Peter always had a smile of his face whenever I met him and always stopped to say hello and have a quick chat. As both of us were Liverpool fans, he would always give me updates on Liverpool matches while we trained or played games and we chatted about Liverpool and the games they played.
'The Town of Cavan has loss a valuable member of their community. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, sisters, immediate family and friends.'
As an added mark of respect, all Cavan Celtic training is cancelled this week.
