'United we stand'- Cathaoirleach

Cathaoirleach Madeleine Argue has praised the sense of togetherness within the local authority where local elected members regularly put aside both “personal and political interests” for the betterment of the county.

She made the comments when addressing her fellow Councillors at their final monthly meeting of the year.

In jest and with the looming local elections in 2019, Cllr Argue had said: “Much has been achieved in the year gone by, and we can go forward together in 2019 with a sense of hope and achievement – until May anyway!”

In seriousness however, she thanked all the elected members and Council staff for their “support and friendship” since her elevation to the role of Cathaoirleach last June.

“The very united approach of all Elected Members along with our staff, in working for the good of the County, by putting aside personal and political interests, is something very unique to County Cavan. It is remarked upon and noticed by many Councillors from other parts of Ireland. This is a key part of who we are as Cavan people and as Cavan Councillors. We should try to maintain and develop this united spirit further in 2019, even in an Election year. United we stand and divided we fall.”

Pointing to a recent event in the Hotel Kilmore where the Council celebrated retirees and those with over 25 years service, she described public service as a “noble calling”.

“It is about serving the community and the country, and serving a cause greater than yourself.

“With that in mind, I want to pay tribute to Director of Service Joe McLoughlin who retired this year. Des Maguire will be also retiring in the very near future. Des, we will miss you hugely, especially at Budget time.”

She also thanked the Directors of Service, and Chief Executive Tommy Ryan for their “leadership in the day-to-day running” of the county, as well as the many staff to provide “discreet but professional backup” to the running of meetings and provide support to the Cathaoirleach's role.

Tribute was furthermore paid to Fianna Fail's Clifford Kelly, as Leas Cathaoirleach, and to the local media who she described as helping keep democracy, both locally and nationally, “vibrant and alive”.

Finally, the Cathaoirleach, noted her role and its “deep connection” with Cavan's Diaspora through the official visits to London, Germany and America.

“I extend my good wishes to all the Cavan Diaspora, and the Cavan Associations past and present this Christmas and for the New Year.

“To those travelling home for Christmas we wish you safe travels,” Cllr Argue added.
