Cavan Choir Armistice Day commemoration

Over 400 people attended a commemorative event in the Cathedral of St Patrick and St Felim last Sunday [November 11] to mark the centenary of Armistice Day.

The recital by Cavan Choir acknowledged the 694 Cavan men who served in the British army that perished in WWI. The county will continue to mark the the centenary of the end of this horrific conflict that claimed the lives of as many as 37 million people throught the month of November.

Cavan Singers tied in two other anniversaries for the November 11 concert. The concert also commemorates the 87 Irish service personnel who gave their lives in the name of World peace with the United Nations, the 170th Anniversary of the Irish Tricolour and the centenary of ‘Women's Franchise’.
Cavan Singers performed Faure’s Requiem with the Cadenza String Orchestra and renowned organist David Grealy. Niamh McCormick (Shercock) was the soloist and well known Baritone Brendan Collins also accompanied.

Dermot McMonagle is a member of the choir: “It went exceptionally well,” he told the Celt, “The concert was a rousing success, both for the Choir and the audience. From the presentation of the flag to the last post it was a very emotional evening.”

Further commemorative events take place throughout the rest of the month. An Ecumenical Service will take place on Sunday, November 25 at 3pm, where Fr Seán McDermott and Dean Nigel Crossey will be joined by the Cavan Rugby Club Choir in remembering those who fought and died in the war.
