Garda appeal following raid on Ballyconnell pub

A raid on a Ballyconnell pub, stolen jeeps, door-to-door scammers, a stolen boiler and a drink driver five times over the limit were among the crimes handled by gardaí in the region over the past few days. Gardaí are appealing for your help in tracing some of the culprits.

 

Gardaí investigate burglary at Ballyconnell pub
Cash, alcohol and cigarettes when stolen when raiders gained entry to a Ballyconnell bar during the early hours of last Saturday morning, October 13.
The burglars entered through a rear window of the Woodfood Arms on Bridge Street, with an alert later issued calling for the public to report any suspicious activity observed in the local area to contact gardaí on 049-4368800.
Meanwhile, separately a man has been charged after appearing before Carrickmacross charged after being found in possession of certain articles for use in theft or burglaries.
The male was stopped by gardaí in the Lagan area of Belturbet on Tuesday, October 9 last, and was subsequently arrested.

Cross-border crime detection
The PSNI and the Gardaí have arrested four people on suspicion of handling stolen property after stolen Toyota Landcruisers and parts from similar vehicles were recovered during a cross-border operation in south Armagh.
The authorities are now working to trace the original owners of the jeeps. 
Separately, almost 200 checkpoints were set up on both sides of the Border in recent weeks in a bid to crack down on cold callers and door-to-door scamming in rural areas.
Some nine vehicles seized, and two people arrested as part of what is understood to be an ongoing operation.

 

Funding for Bawnboy Station reopening
Bawnboy Garda Station is to receive a share of €1 million to fund its reopening, the Public Accounts Committee has been told.
Bawnboy and four others will share from the same pot, with an estimated €250,000 to refurbish the West Cavan station.
Last year it was announced that six Garda stations are due to reopen as part of a commitment contained in the Programme for a Partnership Government.
Along with Bawnboy, the other stations include Stepaside Garda Station in Dublin, Ballinspittle in Cork, Donard in Wicklow, Rush in Dublin, and Leighlinbridge in Carlow.
Earlier this year the OPW has completed its assessments of each station, with reports on how best to proceed provided to Garda management.

 

Cavan driver five times over the limit
A total of six drivers were stopped on suspicion of driving driving by gardaí in Cavan last week, including one who provided a breath sample five times over the legal limit.
Cavan Roads Policing detected the drunk driver, who was subsequently charged and bailed to appear before a future local court sitting.

 

Oil burner stolen from house
Gardaí have appealed for witnesses after an oil burner was stolen from a house in the Lakeview estate area in Cavan Town.
The incident was reported to gardai on Tuesday, October 9 last, but may have occurred in preceding weeks.
Meanwhile, gardaí have called on members of the public to ensure that their properties are secure.
The appeal comes after a woman witnessed a man walking out of her College Street home after using her bathroom on Tuesday, October 9 last.
The incident occurred during daylight hours, around afternoon.
