Weather warning update

 

Though Cavan is expected to escape the worst ravages of Storm Callum the public have been warned about the hazards of the high winds.

A Status Orange weather warning was issued for 12 coastal counties and Met Éireann has issued a Yellow alert for Cavan as the high winds are set to hit tonight [Thursday].

Storm Callum's South to southeast winds will gust to between 90 and 110 km/h. A spell of heavy rain will accompany the winds.

Tonight it will become very windy with strong and gusty southeast winds associated with storm Callum. Winds will reach gale or strong gale force along the coast later in the night with possibly damaging gusts. There will be rain as well later in the night. Lowest temperatures of 8 to 10 degrees will occur early in the night.

Tomorrow, Friday, winds will ease somewhat in the morning, becoming fresh to strong southerly. However, it will stay very windy on west coasts throughout the day with southerly gales or strong gales and further severe gusts. Rain will clear quickly and it will be dry for a time but later in the afternoon outbreaks of rain will develop again. Highest temperatures of 14 to 16 degrees.

Met Éireann said: “It is vital that the recipient of such a warning is prepared for the potential impacts of such an event.”

The weather warning will come into effect at 11pm tonight [Thursday] and will remain in place until 9pm on Friday night.

A Status Yellow advisory covers Carlow, Kildare, Kilkenny, Laois, Longford, Offaly, Westmeath, Cavan, Monaghan, Leitrim, Roscommon, Limerick and Tipperary.

The band of stormy weather will bring a risk of coastal flooding to the west of the country while a separate area of low pressure could bring heavy rainfall to the east at the weekend. County Cork has already experienced flooding.
