Walker makes grizzly find

The killing and dumping of five ducks in a beautiful scenic area of Cavan has been described as “wanton” by one of the men who made the gruesome discovery. A plastic bag containing five shot ducks was taken from the Annalee River on Sunday after it was spotted by a walker.
The fowl were found at Ballinallen Bridge, between Bunnoe and Drung. The man, who did not wish to be named, brought photos to the Celt offices of the ducks.
Ballinallen Bridge is a renowned fishing spot and the man who made the grizzly find is also a keen angler: “I was having a look in the river to watch the fish. At this time of year they can be very active. Then I saw the bag floating in the river."
He enlisted the assistance of an angler to recover the bag. “There was another man out fishing. He had waders on him, so he waded in and took the bag out of the water. When we opened it up, the birds were inside it. There were three drakes and two ducks.”
The killing of the fowl was not the issue for the men who made the find. “The duck shooting season has been open since September 1. I have no objection to people shooting, but this was just wanton. Surely there was someone who would have eaten them. To just kill them, throw them in a plastic bag and dump them in the river is wrong,” he said.
Such a find is not usual, but neither is it unique: “There are times when you could see people throw cats or dogs in a plastic bag into the river, but this is first time I have seen something like this,” he said.
