Six post offices to close
A total of six Post Offices across the county of Cavan are set to close their doors following an announcement by An Post. An agreement between An Post and the Postmasters Union sees Killeshandra, Kilnaleck, Corraneary, Mountnugent, Tullyvin and Swanlinbar wind up operations.
The six post offices are among over 159 rural post offices to face closure under a retirement scheme brokered between An Post and the Postmasters Union. None applied for immediate retirement but it is believed the five Cavan offices applied for the voluntary redundancy.
In the statement issued by An Post they outline the options available to customers served by the existing post offices.
The closest post office option to Corraneary is Canningstown which the An Pos say is 3km, while for Killeshandra it is Carrigallen which is 9.5km. Kilnaleck customers will be served by Ballyjamesduff a 9.2km trip, while Mountnugent will also be served by Ballyjamesduff with a journey of 7.7km.
Swanlinbar customers will transfer to Ballyconnell which is 14.6km and for Tullyvin service users the trek will be to Cootehill 5.3km away.
Debbie Byrne, the Managing Director of An Post Retail, thanked postmasters who have retired for their service to An Post and local communities: “We fully acknowledge that this process will be difficult for some customers and communities but the end result will be a strengthened, viable post office network serving the needs of our country for the future,” she said.
