Five Post Offices named to close
Five Post Offices in Cavan are rumoured set to be closing their doors. It suggests that an agreement between An Post and the Postmasters Union will see Killeshandra, Kilnaleck, Corraneary, Mountnugent and Swanlinbar wind up operations.
The five post offices are among over 100 rural post offices to face closure under a retirement scheme brokered between An Post and the Postmasters Union.
An Post received applications from 110 post offices across the country expressing interest in the voluntary retirement package.
None applied for immediate retirement but it is believed the five Cavan offices applied for the voluntary redundancy.
In a post on a social media account Fianna Fail TD, Niamh Smyth, said the service will be missed by users: “While these closures are being made in consultation with the owners, this represents a major blow to these rural communities that depend so much on the Post Office Network. The Government have repeatedly and systemically let down these communities. I want to take this opportunity to thank postmasters for their thousands of hours of service to their respective communities over the years. You will be very much missed!”
Details on when the Post Offices are set to close have yet to be made available.
