All set for Sam Bennett Vintage Memorial Run
The eighth annual Sam Bennett memorial run will take place today (Saturday) and, to date, the event has raised in excess of €100,000 for various local charities in the county.
Winston Bennett says it is a two-hour, 30km run and commences at Ballinagh Community Hall at 12 noon. Owners of vintage vehicles are welcome to join in the run. There will be a bucket collection on the day and sponsorship cards are now in circulation. Sam Bennett was one of the founder members of the Ballinagh and District Vintage Club.
John Walsh, representing the friends of the Stroke Unit at Cavan General told the Celt, that he is happy to report that the Ballinagh and District Vintage Club are donating all the funds raised from the Sam Bennett Memorial vintage run to the Stroke Unit.
He revealed that stroke is the leading cause of disability in Ireland and approximately 7,500 new strokes are diagnosed in Ireland per year.
He added that, in 2011, Cavan General Hospital opened an in-patient stroke care facility with a dedicated multi-disciplined stroke care team attached. It includes medical, nursing, speech and language therapy and diabetes treatment and management.
“This facility is improving the outcome for stroke patients. The patients also benefit from rapid access to Rehab services in Monaghan Hospital,” said Mr Walsh.
