Call for feasibility study of Dublin to Cavan rail line

The prospect of a rail link between Cavan and the capital is to be the subject of a proposed discussion between rail chiefs and elected representatives.

Cavan-Monaghan deputy Niamh Smyth (FF) has written to the Clerk of the Oireachtas Committee on Rural and Community Development to invite representatives of Iarnród Éireann and the Department of Transport to discuss the feasibility of the reopening of the Dublin to Kingscourt rail line.
Deputy Smyth raised the issue at a meeting of the Rural and Community Development Committee last week. She said the lack of a rail link was “a grave oversight” that is “limiting the potential of region”.
The Fianna Fail representative maintains that there is a ready market for the service: “The re-opening of the Kingscourt to Dublin line would not only provide a new and improved commuting option for the hundreds of people who travel from Cavan and Monaghan to the capital every day, it would also offer businesses and companies alternative transport options.”
