55.5% Yes vote for Cavan Monaghan
It’s all done and dusted at the Sports and Leisure Centre Drumalee in Cavan. The Returning Officer made the result available before Sinn Féin Deputy Caoimghín Ó Caoláin proceeded to read out the decision of the Cavan Monaghan voters in the 2018 Repeal of the 8th Amendment Referendum.
The group that thronged around the TD were exclusively Yes campaigners. Even before he got to the Yes vote numbers tears of joy were streaming down the faces of some of the supporters. The Sinn Féin deputy told the activists that the Electorate was 91,062, the turnout was 58,067 (63.8%), there were 163 spoiled votes leaving a total valid pole of 57,904.
The Yes ballot papers numbered 32,115 (55.5%), while the No votes totalled 25,789 (44.5%). The final numbers were greeted with a cheer from the campaigners.
