'Gentleman' farmer to be laid to rest following farm accident

The funeral will take place this morning of a 'gentleman' farmer from Cootehill who died following a farm accident last weekend.

Alphonsos (Foncie) Smith from Nutfield, Tullyvin, Cootehill, will repose at his home until removal this morning at 11:30am to arrive at St Bridget’s Church, Kill, for 12 noon Funeral Mass. Burial will take place afterwards in the adjoining cemetery.

Gardaí and the Health and Safety Authority (HSA) are continuing to investigate the circumstances behind the accident.
The 77-year-old father of five was brought to Cavan General Hospital following the farm accident on Saturday, April 21, but was later pronounced dead.
One neighbour said the local community was reeling in shock following Mr Smith's death, describing the former ESB worker as a “gentleman”.
Gardaí and emergency services were called to the scene of the farm accident following the incident, which occurred at around 10.30am.
“Gardai are investigating a farming accident, which occurred on Saturday the 21st of April 2018, Cootehill. 
A male in his 70s was brought to Cavan General Hospital and was later pronounced dead.
 HSA have been notified and are investigating also,” a spokesperson for An Garda Síochána told The Anglo-Celt this week.
According to the HSA, 24 people lost their lives in farming-related incidents last year.
