SF host Monaghan selection convention Thursday
Sinn Féin is to host the selection convention for the Monaghan based candidate to contest the next General Election in the Four Seasons Hotel in Monaghan town this Thursday [April 26]. The candidate to succeed the long serving Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin will be announced at the meeting.
Deputy Ó Caoláin announced his decision to step down after the next election at an event at the Errigal Hountry House Hotel, Cootehill, at the start of March. At that event Party President Mary Lou McDonald commended her party college: “ Caoimhghín has always been a trailblazer, a tremendous worker and a committed family man.”
A second convention to select a Cavan based candidate will take place at an event in Cavan town at a date yet to be finalised. Sinn Féin will be fielding two candidates in the Cavan Monaghan constituency as they did in '11 and '16.
At the event in Coothill Deputy McDonald said that there party's intention was to field a gender balanced ticket. Speculation is rife that the Monaghan half of the ticket will be filled by MEP Matt Carthy, however the Cavan side remains a mystery.
