Most pubs open on Good Friday

 

Legally allowed to open on the annual Holy Day for the first time since 1927, some pubs however decided to stick with tradition by keeping doors closed on Good Friday.

The small minority were reportedly closed in most towns and villages across the county on Friday last, March 30, while other pub businesses opted instead remain to shut until the evening time.

Its estimated the State will reap close to an additional €3 million in taxes alone due to new changes to the Intoxicating Liquor Act.

The bill, first introduced by Senator Billy Lawless, was passed in the Seanad, and voted through the Dail on January 25.

But some local publicans The Anglo-Celt spoke with lamented the loss of a rest day leading into what would be a busy Easter Weekend, while others recalled the fact that pubs across Ireland use to also shut their doors on St Patrick's Day.

They surmised therefore pubs having been closed will similarly soon fade from memory.
