Man dies climbing Cuilcagh
A man has died having suffered a suspected heart attack while walking in the Cuilcagh Mountain area.
Police received a call regarding concern for the safety of a man aged in his early 50's in the Cuilcagh Mountain area in Co Fermanagh around 12.20pm on Tuesday afternoon last, February 13.
They had been walking along the board walk on Cuilcagh Mountain, close to the border with Co Cavan.
Teams from the NIAS and North West Mountain Rescue were immediately dispatched to the area, while others in the area, including member's of the man's walking group and two off-duty medical professionals also came to his aid.
“We immediately tasked the NIAS and North West Mountain Rescue to the area to locate the 51 year old gentleman who, it was reported, had suffered a suspected heart attack while walking in the area,” Inspector Andy Hood has said.
“Other members of the man’s walking group and two off-duty medical professionals came to his aid and then CPR was taken over by the ambulance crew.”
Despite their best efforts, the male was pronounced dead a short time later and a post-mortem is due to be carried out.
The PSNI have appealed for witnesses to the incident to come forward. They are not treating the death as suspicious at this time, and are anxious to speak with the two medical professionals who assisted the stricken walker.
Inspt Hood added: “We would like to record statements from all those who witnessed the incident and would ask that the two medical professionals who kindly helped this gentleman to get in touch with police in Enniskillen on 101, quoting reference 489 of 13/2/18.”
In a Facebook post, the North West Mountain Rescue wrote: “We would like to offer our condolences and sympathy to the family and friends of the deceased.”
